The B-Town actress Riya Sen has a prior commitment to perform in a show in Hong Kong during Christmas.

De Waddeneilanden zijn in de ban van de mysterieuze verschijning van een groep herten. Op Terschelling leeft sinds kort een roedel van zeker tien herten. Op Schiermonnikoog is bovendien vorige week een dood hert aangespoeld.

Het is onduidelijk waar de dieren vandaan komen, zegt districtsmedewerker Freek Zwart van Staatsbosbeheer op Terschelling tegen elsevier.nl.
Mogelijk maken de dieren maken gebruik van het getij in de Waddenzee om naar de eilanden te lopen en zwemmen. Maar Zwart vindt het waarschijnlijker dat de herten door mensen zijn uitgezet.
‘Herten hebben een grote belevingswaarde. Of mensen zetten ze uit om er vervolgens op te gaan jagen.’

Ziektes
De gemeente, Staatsbosbeheer en land- en tuinbouworganisatie LTO Noord overleggen momenteel met elkaar wat er met de dieren moet gebeuren. Ze kunnen namelijk ziektes op koeien overbrengen en ook zijn ze een gevaar voor autoverkeer. Op Terschelling zijn jaren geleden ook reeën door onbekende uitgezet. Een paar keer per jaar veroorzaken de dieren verkeersongevallen.

Op het eiland is discussie over wat voor herten op het eiland rondlopen: damherten of edelherten. In Nederland leven alleen edelherten op de Veluwe, op de grens van Brabant en Limburg en bij de Oostvaardersplassen. ‘Als het edelherten zijn dan hebben ze een soort triatlon moeten afleggen om op Terschelling te komen,’ zegt Zwart. Damherten komen bijna overal in Nederland voor.

Dood hert
Op Schiermonnikoog is vorige week al een dood hert aangespoeld. Niet duidelijk is waar het dier vandaan komt. ‘Mijn zoon werd gebeld door een visserman die iets groots in het water zag drijven. Hij zit bij de reddingsmaatschappij en zij zijn wezen kijken. Maar ze konden niks vinden. Toen is hij later naar het strand gegaan en daar vond hij aan de oostkant van het eiland een dood hert,’ aldus eendenkooibeheerder Teun Talsma van Schiermonnikoog.

In het Lauwersmeergebied op de grens van Groningen en Friesland leeft een roedel damherten. Dat gebied ligt niet ver van Schiermonnikoog. Maar ook hier is niet duidelijk of het dier is overgestoken of door mensen naar het eiland is gebracht.

Het invoeren van honden- en kattenbont wordt in de Europese Unie per 1 januari verboden. Actiegroepen stellen dat Nederland onvoldoende hierop is voorbereid, maar een woordvoerder van het ministerie van LNV zegt dat de Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit wel degelijk alert is.

Volgens “Actie tegen Dierenleed” en “Dieren helpen in Azië” valt het niet mee om nepbont te onderscheiden van honden- en kattenbont. Gerenommeerde kledingmerken doen het voorkomen alsof ze nepbont verkopen, maar maken gebruik van onder meer goedkoop hondenbont uit China.

Volgens het ministerie heeft ons land de beschikking over geavanceerde apparatuur en heeft onderzoek al uitgewezen, dat honden- en kattenbont nauwelijks voorkomen in ons land.

Animal wardens are trying to find out who has been dumping sick or dying dogs in a remote part of Berkshire. At least five animals have been left for dead in a churchyard in Farley Hill, near Wokingham, over the past 12 to 14 months.

The cases are all being linked by Wokingham Borough Council wardens.
Steve Tulley, the new owner of one dog, said: “It’s disgraceful that there are still people in our society that are prepared to abandon dogs in this way.”
His dog, Amber, was feverish and uncared for when she was found but has since recovered.
However, another of the dogs died before help arrived.

Animal warden Mandy Dorman appealed for information.
“Has anyone seen anyone acting suspiciously around the whole area, not just this location, or has seen animals that aren’t in very good condition and thinks that somebody else might report it,” she said.

A well-known United States animal lover has reportedly offered to take all 30,000 wild horses held by the Bureau of Land Management. The Washington Post reports that Madeleine Pickens, wife of Texas billionaire T. Boone Pickens, made the offer, which was discussed at the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board meeting yesterday.

The 30,000 horses held by the bureau threaten to overwhelm the annual budget allocated for the management of the wild horse and burro population. The number in captivity is now just short of the 33,000 estimated to still roam free on the range.
The BLM has the power to euthanize horses that cannot be adopted, or sell them “without limitation”, but has resisted doing so because of concerns over a possible public backlash.

Mrs Pickens is reportedly negotiating with the bureau over taking a majority of the captive horses and is said to be seeking land suitable for rehoming them.
It is understood another unnamed benefactor has offered to take 5000 horses.
The BLM has meanwhile deferred any move to immediately euthanize or sell horses without limitation.

The advisory board has voted that such actions would only be measures of last resort.
However, with rangeland populations doubling every four years if left unmanaged, the bureau will be concentrating efforts on finding longer-term solutions.

The BLM had considered euthanizing 2300 horses this financial year and selling 8000 without limitation - a move almost certain to see a majority go for slaughter.
The bureau was criticised in a recently released report from the Goverment Accountability Office which, while acknowledging the pressure from the public to continue to care for the horses, said the BLM was failing to comply with the law in refusing to pursue all management options available to it - euthanasia and sales without limitation.

It urged the bureau to takes its concerns to Congress in an effort to find a solution to the problem.

Dubai: An Emirati fisherman caught a whale shark off the coast of Ras Al Kahimah on Wednesday, but the Environmental Protection and Industrial Authority set it free. Mohammad Ebrahim Ali Al Mazrouei, a fisherman from Al Muaireed in Ras Al Khaimah, never imagined catching a fish weighing around two tonne.

He was surprised to spot something heavy entangled in the net and called on his assistants for help. Together they pulled in the net to find a shark.

As soon as they reached the shore, which took them more than five hours, they alerted local authorities.

Dr Saif Al Ghais, head of Environmental and Industrial Authority, said the young female whale shark is five-meters long.
The fisherman, on the instruction of the authorities, will take the shark into the deep sea and will set it free.

Dr Al Ghais urged fishermen to leave whale sharks alone as they are harmless creatures.

Changchun, China — The discovery of Amur tiger tracks in Changbaishan in north-eastern China has given conservationists hope for a species that is rarely seen in that area. A walker in the region spotted the tracks and recorded them on his mobile phone. A century ago such a sight would have been fairly common, with hundreds of Amur tigers,on the prowl. It is thought that now only about 20 remain in the area.

“Tiger tracks found in this area show that the tigers are moving deeper into China from the Sino-Russian border,” said Fan Zhiyong, director of WWF-China’s Species Programme. “Therefore, it is of critical importance that tiger conservation occurs in the whole Changbaishan area.”

There are just over 500 Amur tigers in the wild and it is listed as critically endangered on IUCN’s red list of endangered species. The main threats to Amur tigers in north-eastern China are habitat degradation, poaching, fragmentation of tiger habitats and a small prey population to feed from.

WWF and its partners have been focusing their efforts to save the Amur tiger on a number of fronts:
helping ungulate populations such as wild boar and roe deer — which are the tiger’s main prey — to recover by helping communities find alternative livelihood options;
stopping poaching by helping local authorities carry out anti-poaching activities;
and increasing and connecting protected tiger habitats so tigers can safely move from one area to another.

Thanks to vigorous anti-poaching and other conservation efforts on the Russian side, the tiger population there has become stable over the last decade and is beginning to increase. As such, should the feeding population in Changbaishan be restored and protected in an effectively managed tiger habitat, then those tigers across the border may come to occupy the area.

Conservationists in the Changbaishan area are very eager for this to occur, and the fact that tiger tracks have now been found in the Wangqing Forestry Bureau twice in the last two years is an encouraging sign. “Although Wangqing Forestry Bureau is a timber management unit, it attaches great importance to wildlife conservation,”said Liang Jixiang, head of the Forest Management Department of Wangqing Forestry Bureau. “We are calling for support and help from interested parties and experts at home and abroad to help find ways to make Wangqing a home for tigers.”

WWF’s Changchun Programme Office has recently developed the Hungchun-Wangqing-Dongning Tiger Conservation Planning tool enable greater coordination of activities across the region and to help maintain these fragile populations of Amur tiger.

“WWF is working with the Chinese government and other partners to achieve the restoration and recovery of tigers to north-east China — the one remaining place in all of China where the recovery of this majestic species is a real possibility,” said Dr. Susan Lieberman, director of WWF-International’s Species Programme.

De politie onderzoekt samen met de Landelijke Inspectiedienst Dierenbescherming (LID) de verwaarlozing van een groep ponys, geiten, schapen en konijnen in een weiland aan de Polderdijk in Heerenveen. Hiervoor is de eigenaar, een 56-jarige man uit Heerenveen proces-verbaal aangezegd. Een pony, 9 geiten en 10 konijnen zijn inmiddels al in beslag genomen.

Na een melding van bewoners uit de omgeving ging de politie samen met twee medewerkers van de dierenambulance op 12 oktober kijken bij de groep dieren. De melder had aangegeven dat één van de ponys al maanden kreupel liep. Daarnaast zouden meerdere dieren slecht verzorgd worden. Ter plaatse bleek dat de pony slecht op zijn hoeven stond en kreupel was aan alle vier benen. De eigenaar verklaarde dat de pony ongeveer tien jaar geleden voor het laatst bij de hoefsmid was geweest. Verder werd geconstateerd dat nog twee ponys al lang niet meer bij een hoefsmid waren geweest en er zaten geiten en konijnen zonder water of voer. De eigenaar beloofde beterschap.

Twee dagen later bij een volgende controle constateerde de politie dat de dieren nog steeds geen water en voer hadden gekregen. De pony die bij de eerste melding werd aangetroffen is in beslag genomen. Bij nader onderzoek in een dierenkliniek was te zien op röntgenfotos dat de punt van het hoefbeen al zodanig was afgesleten, dat er geen kans op herstel was. Uiteindelijk is de pony uit zijn lijden verlost.

Nadat er diverse controles zijn gehouden en de situatie niet verbeterde zijn op 3 november negen geiten en tien konijnen in beslag genomen. De 30 nog aanwezige schapen (10 kreupel) zijn achter gebleven in de percelen met voldoende voer en water. De beklaagde zal maatregelen treffen om de schapen weer in orde te krijgen. Vier andere ponys hebben nu inmiddels ook voldoende verzorging. De situatie zal door zowel de politie, als de LID nauwlettend in de gaten worden gehouden.

LEWISBURG, W.Va. - A video released by an animal rights group on Tuesday claims to show horrific abuse of turkeys at West Virginia farms operated by major global poultry grower Aviagen Inc.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said the video, which includes workers stomping on turkeys’ heads and twisting their necks to kill them, was shot by an undercover investigator who worked on the companies’ farms for more than two months. The undercover worker, who was not identified, described stifling, dusty barns where the animals were kept and caught video of several workers killing turkeys, slamming them into metal cages and bragging about previous abuse of the animals.

A company official told The New York Times that they “condemn the abuse of any of the animals in our care and will take swift action to address these issues.” They said they would investigate the allegations, which could lead to firing employees who were involved.

The name of the undercover worker was not released. The animal rights group said it filed a criminal complaint of animal cruelty in the county where the farms are located. A dispatcher in the Greenbrier County sheriff’s office was unable to confirm whether the complaint had been filed Tuesday night.

Norfolk, Va.-based PETA campaigns most years against the practices of turkey growers before Thanksgiving and encourages Americans to find vegetarian substitutes for the bird, such as tofu.
The video showing the turkey abuse was posted on PETA’s Web site. A message left after business hours in the general mailbox at the Alabama headquarters of Aviagen North America was not immediately returned. A message left late Tuesday night with the vice president of operations at subsidiary Aviagen Turkeys Inc., in East Lewisburg, W.Va., also was not immediately returned.

The farm of blue scorpions Rhopalurus Junceus, an endemic species from Cuba, located in the province of Cienfuegos, increased the number of specimens used in the project called “Demonstration of the anti-cancer venom effect” of the type also called by Cuban peasants Red Scorpion.

The Head of the Department of Homeopathy and Scorpions in the province Fabio Linares Pazos told AIN (National News Agency in Cuba) that at the moment Cuban scientists are the only ones who use the venom for therapeutic aims to treat cancer, since in other parts of the world it is used in the elaboration of antidotes.

The center, part of the Pharmaceutical Biological Laboratories (Labiofam), counts with 4,000 animals, eight times the number used at beginnings of 2008.

Linares assured that the increase in number of this specimen takes place due to the ideal conditions of humidity of the environment where they are placed, at Raul Dorticos Torrado Faculty of Medical Sciences.
He added that this increase is very important for the accomplishment of the research, since it provides the lab with greater volumes of venom, the active principle of the anti-carcinogenic medicine.

The blue scorpion is found inhabiting the entire Cuban archipelago including the adjacent keys. It is not an urban species, meaning that it does not inhabit with human beings in the city.

It is the largest of all the Cuban scorpions. It can only compare in size with the Centruroides gracilis species but both are clearly anatomically distinguishable. The blue scorpion Rhopalurus junceus has only one large sting in its tail while the Centruroides gracilis has two: a big and a smaller one.

DEN HAAG - Minister Gerda Verburg (LNV) trekt de portemonnee om de paling te beschermen. Ze wil de vangst beperken en de vissers hiervoor compenseren, schrijft zij aan de Tweede Kamer. Minister Gerda Verburg gaat meer geld uittrekken om de paling te beschermen…

Verburg wil visserijvrije zones instellen op plaatsen die belangrijk zijn voor de trek van de aal. Ook wil zij een verbod voor beroepsvissers om in de periode van 1 september tot 31 oktober op paling te vissen. In deze periode is de trek van de schieraal op zijn top.

Verburg stelt jaarlijks 400.000 euro uit het Europese Visserijfonds beschikbaar om vissers te compenseren.
Uiterlijk 1 juli volgend jaar moeten in de Europese Unie „aalbeheerplannen” in werking zijn en kan er alleen op paling worden gevist volgens de regels in zo’n plan.
Het plan voorziet ook in maatregelen om gemalen, stuwen, sluizen en dammen beter passeerbaar te maken voor de aal. De overheid zal daaraan de komende jaren meer dan 200 miljoen euro besteden. Sportvissers zijn vanaf 1 januari volgend jaar verplicht om gevangen paling terug te zetten.

De minister wil vanaf 2011 ook het recreatief vissen met beroepsvistuigen door particulieren in de Waddenzee, Eems/Dollard, Oosterschelde en Westerschelde verbieden. Zij wil ook 300.000 euro beschikbaar stellen voor het uitzetten van aal.
